PS17Q Class Parents

The PTA is recruiting caregivers who would like to serve as Class Parents for the remainder of this school year.

A class parent facilitates communication between caregivers and the teacher, the school administration, and the PTA. Serving as a class parent is an excellent opportunity to connect to your child’s class and to be involved in both the classroom and student/family community. Class parents can perform their roles remotely. Bilingual caregivers are especially encouraged to apply - please share your skills to help bring our community together!

What is a Class Parent?

A class parent facilitates communication between caregivers and the teacher, the school administration, and the PTA. Serving as a class parent is an excellent opportunity to connect to your child’s class and to be involved in both the classroom and student/family community.

In some cases, there could be more than one class parent, allowing volunteers to split the work. Class parents can also perform their roles remotely. Bilingual caregivers are especially encouraged to apply - please share your skills to help bring our community together!

Potential Class Parent Responsibilities

Class parent responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Attend a Class Parent Orientation Session with Ms. Heyward and the PTA to learn more about the role and expectations (Two sessions will be available: February 12, 6pm and February 14, 8:30 am. Both sessions will be held in person AND on Zoom)

  2. Meet with the teacher to discuss the role they would like the class parent to play and maintain a positive working relationship with the teacher.

  3. Help to build the community amongst students and families and keep the community connected.

  4. Set up a list of e-mail addresses and telephone numbers for communication with the families.

  5. Help the teacher coordinate classroom related caregiver events and projects, send out e-mail (or text/WhatsApp) reminders about them, and help recruit volunteers for these activities.

  6. Serve as a critical link in communicating feedback and information between parents and teachers. As a representative for your class, parents may approach you about concerns and ideas they would like to share with the school. Teachers may solicit your feedback regarding grade-level events and changes, as well as ask you to disseminate information regarding the class.

  7. Act as a liaison between the classroom parents, parent coordinator, and the PTA. Although it is not mandated, it is helpful to attend PTA general meetings when possible.
